Channel 4, which has announced a second series of hit Queer As Folk, is now also considering a spin-off soap version of it to air late next year.

The channel has asked for plots to be sketched out for 20 half-hour shows which could be extended.

Commissioning Editor Jonathan Young said: "We found a huge enthusiasm for the show and it was quite clear that we hadn't run out of stories.

"It's been a very successful show for Channel 4, " he added.
