A toned-down version of Channel 4's
controversial gay drama Queer As Folk is heading for America.

- The series, which featured naked under-age gay sex, caused outrage
when it was first shown last year and faced criticism from the Broadcasting
Standards Commission.
- A 22-hour series about the lives and loves of gay men is about to be
shot in the US. Writer Russell T Davies says: "There won't be as much
sex as in the British version."
Queer As Folk creator Russell T Davies
isn't upset that a US version of the gay drama will be watered down.

- He says: "It's better to be toned down than not made at all. No
one has been cast yet but I think it will be unknowns."
- The UK series starring Aidan Gillen, Craig Kelly and Denise Black has
already been sold to 13 countries and it's Channel 4's biggest selling
video ever.
There's very little naked flesh on
view in the gay drama sequel Queer As Folk 2 compared to the original series.

- Writer Russell T Davies says: "There are no naked sex scenes in
this one but I think it's more shocking when the two central characters,
played by Aidan Gillen and Craig Kelly, go to bed after 16 years and don't
have sex.
- "Some people may also be shocked to see a boy of 15 having tea
with his boyfriend, his mum and his sister."
Queer As Folk 2 follows the unrequited
love of Vince (Craig Kelly) for gay pal Stuart (Aidan Gillen).

- While the two continue to get their kicks on Manchester's Canal Street,
Stuart is being blackmailed by his nephew about his sexuality and he has
to come out to his parents.
- New gay on the block Nathan discovers there's life after Stuart, while
Vince's outrageous mum Hazel (Denise Black) is desperate for her son to
get it together with Stuart.
Queer As Folk writer Russell T Davies
has been amazed by the change in people's reaction to C4's gay drama.

- He says: "Critics last year said the series proved we needed censorship
but now that it's being repeated it's being praised as quality drama. It's
a complete turnaround.
- "Last year it was called shocking sex but it's not new. When I
was 15, I saw I, Claudius - and people were having sex with their sisters
and even horses!"
Queer As Folk 2 star Craig Kelly
and writer Russell T Davies are sad that the gay drama finally has ended.

- Craig says: "It's the best thing I've ever done so it was upsetting
to finish it. But it was better to go out on a high than milk it."
- Russell adds: "I didn't want to drag it out, I wanted to leave people
wanting more. I wouldn't mind going back to the characters in another 20 years
or so, but I'll probably be dead by then."
